We have all seen or experienced it before---those inappropriate and often unsanitary actions which disgust and annoy most cultured people in society. Spitting, littering, peeing in public - all these and others fall into this category. I personally had the embarrassing experience one late night of seeing a man peeing alongside the river. He was not embarrassed at all.
Such inappropriate public behavior has a terrible effect on society. For one thing, most unsanitary behavior can spread germs and diseases to the general public. For another, they contribute to the pollution of the environment and show little or no consideration for the environment.
We must take steps as a society to improve this situation. Our government should sponsorpublic announcements and advertisements to emphasize the cultural inappropriateness of this kind of behaviors. Our schools and teachers should teach and enforce acceptable standards for all students. And in the home, parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles should all work together to teach the children what is right by example.
It is a common phenomenon that a large number of students are pursuing success with a wrong belief that there exists a shortcut to learning. The picture given reveals this fact in an ironic way. We can easily notice from the cartoon that a student is asking the teacher in the library how to achieve accomplishment in school without studying, while the teacher is pointing to the fiction section to tell him to work hard.
Learning is actually a painstaking process in which both students on campuses and employees of working agencies are struggling to acquire knowledge by sparing great efforts. On the contrary, some people in today’s society aim at studying without hard work, following the so-called “shortcut” ways. From my own perspective, there is no shortcut in the way to learn. First and foremost, learning or obtaining knowledge is based on the accumulation step by step. The famous saying that Rome is not built in one day teaches us that no goal is achieved without persistence and accumulation. In addition, the shortcut to learning is extremely appealing to those who are unwilling to spend time and energy studying because they might win by a fluke. However, students advocating the shortcut is unlikely to win every time. Last but not least, the fickleness and negative attitudes towards exams are responsible for the widespread trend of the shortcut belief, and it surely lead to the failure of study to some students. Taking a look around us, we can find that many agencies and people believe in the prediction of the exams, and students may be indulged in the so-called perditions and pay no attention to studying hard.
As has been mentioned, learning without hard work tends to be useless and meaningless, for students cannot have a great chance to grow into all-round intellectuals. The picture makes us college students aware of the great significance of true skill and genuine knowledge. Only by making efforts to learn in and after class can we gain solid and real ability and competence.
Nowadays a growing number of people, especially the 20s or 30s, tend to stay indoors for most of their spare time, especially on holidays. Some spend the majority of the time online chatting, blogging, shopping, dating or playing computer games. Some sit with their eyes glued to the television screen, day and night.
Peoples opinions vary when it comes to this way of killing time. A great number of people maintain that staying indoors is cheap, comfortable, and most importantly, very safe. Others, however, frown upon staying indoors for too long. They are worried that lack of physical exercise and face-to-face communication with others will do harm to people’s body and mind.
Personally, I dont think staying indoors for most of the day should be advocated. Instead, people in all ages, their physical conditions permitting, should be encouraged to spend more time outdoors. The brilliant sunshine, the pleasant green space, the interactions with other people, etc. are all good for peoples health, both physically and psychologically.
On Volunteer
In recent years, the volunteering spirit has spread widely among the public, especially among youngsters. From Olympic Games to urban communities, many people are seen to offer free help.
Volunteering is of tremendous benefit to those in need. For example, hundreds of thousands of volunteers played an active role in the recent quake-hit Yushu area: they offered medical and psychological aid to the victims in the relief work. On the other hand, volunteering is beneficial to the volunteers themselves too. Involved in volunteering activities, people are exposed to new circumstancesj and they can learn how to work well in a team and how to improve their interpersonal skills, all of which are critical for their career development.
In my view, we should all join in volunteering work as long as we have spare time. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we all volunteer in regions struck by natural disasters. There are many people eise who need our help, i.e. the old or the sick in the near nursing home. Little by EittJe, we are sure to help make the world better.
From the cartoon given above, we can observe that there is a recruiter talking with an interviewee. When looking at the resume submitted by the candidate, the interviewer says,“Sorry, kid… Your resume looks good, but you only have a Master’s degree…All the other applicants are Ph.D. ! ” Having heard these words, the applicant seems to be quite helpless and embarrassed.
The cartoon reveals that the society has been placing a higher value on educational degree. What factors might contribute to this phenomenon? Answers to this question may involve many aspects, and here are a few guesses: for one thing, from the subjective aspect, quite a few employers hold that the higher educational degree people have, the more competent they will be. For another, from the objective aspect, with the professions in modern society becoming increasingly segmented, employees are required to acquire higher degree to fulfill their tasks efficiently.
Definitely, higher degrees enjoy obvious advantages. However, it is not advisable that employers judge a person only by his/ her educational backgrounds. Let alone “Degree Discrimination”。 As for ourselves, we should not only attach a great importance to educational degree, but also spare no efforts to enhance our comprehensive abilities.

Dear Mr. President,
I’m very lucky to attend this world-famous university, but I’m afraid I’m not content with the canteen service on campus.
Firstly, the quality of the dishes should be improved. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of delicious dishes, but all the year round, they are the same. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food each day. So I think the most urgent problem is variety.
Secondly, the price is a bit too high. Many of us hope that the canteen can provide us with not only delicious but also cheaper food.
Finally, the environment is so noisy that we can’t enjoy our meals in good mood. I suggest that there be some soft music to help us relax.
These suggestions are not just of my own, but also of may other students. We hope our respectable president will pay attention to our suggestions.
By the way, the canteen workers are very patient and always smiling. So I think if our university offers them better conditions, they will offer us better service.
Best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Liming
how important is money ?
no one would argue , i think , that money is unimpor tant 。 there a re ce rtain things that human beings need — food , shelter , medical care and these things cost money 。 but if one has enough money to live on , to pay for the basic essentials of life , is it impor tant to have a lot more money than that ?will your life improve in propor tion to the amount of money that you have ?
well , there is no denying that money can buy a lot 。 maybe you do not need much money to pay for a simple shelter , but how about if you want a nice big apar tment in a nice neighbourhood , or if you want to buy a house ? in fact , people do get on each other’s ne rves if they are crowded together in a small kitchen , if a mar ried couple cannot but sha re a room with their parents , if childr en ar e not allowed to have a little privacy of their own 。
mor eove r , it is nice to get a little pleasur e out of life, a little fun from time to time 。 unfor tunately , many of the fun things that you can do today cost money 。 in modern cities , for example , on any night , outstanding performers appear in night clu bs and on concer t stages 。 fur thermore , you can dine on foods f rom eve ry corne r of the wor ld in the restaur ants 。 so how can it be that many people in mode rn cities do not have fun ? simple, they do not have the money to take advantage of all these att ractions 。
so , is money the road to happiness ? not r eally 。 la rge numbers of people work eve ry day , work over time, work weekends , and make a lot of money 。 are they happy ? no 。 they have no time to form or maintain friendship , no time to enjoy themselves 。
sur ely everyone has thought at times ,“if only i had a lot of money , i would be the happiest person in the wor ld 。”but it is impor tant to r emember that money is only a means to an end , not the end itself 。
At present, many people take it for granted that fresh water will never be used up because we can find it not only from the rain, but also in the rivers, lakes and wells. Consequently, it is not necessary for us to worry about global shortage of fresh water.
In fact, the situation has become so serious that everyone should be aware of it and take immediate actions. With the world population increasing rapidly year after year, water resources are being consumed at an appalling speed. Whats more, with the development of science and technology, modern industry needs much more water than before. Thirdly, pollution is also a worrying problemwater in rivers and wells becomes undrinkable because of industrial wastes.
We should take urgent measures to protect fresh water resources. The government should increase the efficiency of water usage by such methods as water recycling and purification of sea water. The people, on the other hand, should form the habit of cherishing every drop of water. Last but not least, pollution must be effectively controlled, if we ever want to improve the quality of life.
punctuality means observing regula r or appointed time 。 a man who gets up a t seven o’clock every morning is pu nctual 。 a man who has promised to call on a friend at five o’clock in the afternoon and actually does so at tha t hour is also punctual
punctuality is a good habit , and unp unctuality a bad one 。 a few minut es’delay may not be a serious mat ter , but it may have bad r es ults 。 get ting up five minutes late r than u sual may upset the plan of the day 。 calling on a friend five minutes later than the appointed time may cau se him some unexpected t rouble 。 moreover , habitual unpunctuality leads to indolence and even failur e in life 。 one delay af ter anothe r makes a man unable to exer t himself 。 it also proves him to be unt rustworthy 。
those who ar e unpunctual s hould t ry their best to get rid of their bad habit 。 in doing this , they should avoid making any kind of exception 。 they should never say to themselves :“a few minutes’delay does not mat ter this time 。 i s hall never be unpunctual again 。”t hose who think in this way will find excuses for delay from time to time , and will at last give up the a ttempt to cultivate the good habit 。
like all other good habits , pu nctuality becomes second natur e with those who have duly cultivat ed it 。
